September 17, 2015 - A&S Faculty Meeting Minutes

1. Approval of A&S Faculty Meeting minutes from April 16, 2015

Dr. Gene Anderson moved approval of the minutes of April 16, 2015. Dr. Reed West seconded. With no further discussion, the minutes were approved by voice vote.

2. Approval of Actions of Academic Council from September 1, 2015, and September 15, 2015

Dr. Michelle Hamm moved approval of the actions of Academic Council from September 1, 2015, and September 15, 2015. Dr. Ted Bunn seconded. With no further discussion, the minutes were approved by voice vote.

3. Suspending Criminal Justice Program—Jan Hoffman French

Dr. Jan French, Chair of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, presented to the faculty the Motion to Eliminate the Criminal Justice Program and explained the department’s rationale. The motion is attached to the agenda.

Dean Skerrett noted that Academic Council approved the motion to suspend in its actions of September 15. With no further discussion, the motion to suspend the Criminal Justice program was approved by voice vote.

4. Report from A&S Senators

Dr. Michelle Hamm spoke on behalf of the A&S Senators, outlining the senate’s hopes and goals for the year ahead. Matters touched on included: planned revisions to the committee structure, the University Faculty Meetings at the end of the Fall 2015 and Spring 2016 semesters, and meetings with President Crutcher to discuss the strategic planning process.

5. Retention and Graduation Study Update - Lori Schuyler

Dr. Lori Schuyler, the Vice President for Planning and Policy, gave a PowerPoint presentation outlining the results of the Retention and Graduation Study. The full report is attached to the meeting agenda.

6. Strategic Planning Process

Dean Skerrett said that President Crutcher informed Academic Council that he would engage the university in a strategic planning process beginning this fall. In preparation, he is currently undertaking a listening tour among all constituencies of the university. Dean Skerrett said that the strategic planning process would be set out later in the fall.

7. Seeking Volunteer Secretary for A&S Faculty Meetings

Dean Skerrett requested volunteers for the role of secretary to the A&S Faculty meetings.
